Teamwork/Community

Virtually every dictionary definition of community speaks of a group of people with common interests, heritage or characteristics. That definition applies in every way to our school community. Though we come from diverse places and backgrounds, we have many common interests and certainly have a common goal of educating ourselves. It is very encouraging that any effort we make at school to build community and to instill an awareness of its importance can have a positive impact well in to the future.
The goal of this unit of study is to help the students understand the characteristics, benefits and importance of community. The curriculum will develop an understanding of classroom and school community with an emphasis on what our responsibilities are as we become important parts of this country’s citizenry.

Play Fair Character Education Lesson and song by Dr. T.

Dr. T stresses the importance and usefulness of following rules. He uses sports as an analogy. Every game has its rules. Those rules define the game. Cheaters can never be winners because cheaters are not in the game if they don’t play fair and by the rules. Dr. T speaks of the fact that doing your best and playing fair makes you a winner. The second you cheat, you have lost.

School Climate/Caring

Most well-meaning education advocates acknowledge the need to improve academic achievement among our students. The challenge is to implement plans that will achieve that goal. Though many conflicting ideas exist, there is one that seems to foster agreement among many advocates. The one solution that crosses ideological rifts is to restore and nurture school civility. An overarching move to restore civility in schools has taken the moniker “Character Education.” Foundational principles of positive civil behavior and discourse are rooted in such concepts as respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, community, etc.

These lessons are designed to help improve the character of our students which in turn will improve the climate of our schools. Improving our school climate will in turn improve the academic achievement of our students. As we will see, there are additional benefits. A positive climate affects everyone on campus, including the staff.
